Welcome to Self Sabotagers Anonymous
If you, like all of us, are addicted to self-sabotage, consistently doing things that prevent you from experiencing the full joy of life – congratulations! Just by contacting us and getting involved you are taking one of the bravest steps possible. You are choosing to end years of frustration and unhappiness. You are choosing to be the person you can truly be.
And the good news is that you can do things to turn your life around. We have all been exactly where you are. We have found that by working the 12 Steps and by sharing our hopes and dreams as well as our struggles and pain, recovery is possible.
Self Sabotagers Anonymous is a new program, just over 4 years old. In spite of the fact that our numbers are small (but growing) larger numbers of people actually spend far too much of their lives living out unhealthy patterns that began years ago in our formative years. Patterns that keep us doing things that lead to unhappiness. Patterns that prevent us from truly embracing life. Our program helps us identify these unhealthy patterns and gives us the tools to make changes.
Most members of SSA came to the program through the book, “When Misery Is Company”, by Anne Katherine. Most of us are involved in other 12 step programs but SSA is home. It is a safe place where we deal with those underlying issues that lead to so many destructive behaviours. It is a place where we are truly understood.
As with all 12 step programs you are encouraged to try it out for at least 6 meetings to see if what we have is for you. This program offers the promise of recovery if you want it and are willing to work for it.
Welcome and we hope you find what you are looking for.
Do you have meetings in Los Angeles County, California?
Hi Sonja,
Thank you for your interest in the Misery Addicts Anonymous/Self Sabotagers Anonymous 12 Step Fellowship.
Currently we do not have meetings in LA County. We do offer 2 phone meetings, one on Saturday morning at 7 a.m. Pacific and the other on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. Pacific. Connect information is available here: http://miseryaddicts.org/ssa-meetings. We also recommend, if you don’t have it, Anne Katherine’s book, When Misery is Compay. Good luck in your journey. There is hope.
Are there any SSA meeting in the San Francisco Bay Area?
Hi Jeff,
We’re still a very young organization. At this time we’re only offering 2 phone meetings and 1 face-to-face meeting in Calgary. See http://miseryaddicts.org/ssa-meetings for Misery Addict Meeting Information. Thanks for your inquiry and good luck to you.
i am most certainly misery addict, and i am really struggling to fight against it. i couldn’t find any treatment for somthing like this, so i was really relieved when i found out there were treatment or at least groups for it. but when i read the twelve points i find that there are a lot of god related things in there. i don’t believe and i most certainly don’t believe god can help me. one of the points if that you must except that no human force can help or cure you but that it must be a greater source like God. do you really believe that, that can’t be all of the treatment. and can you still join this sessions if your not religious.
thanks for reading this and maybe replying
evelien
Hi Evelien,
Thanks for your question. The short answer is yes, you can join Misery Addicts Anonymous regardless of your religious beliefs or non-beliefs.
MAA, like most 12 Step Programs, has a strong spiritual as opposed to religious foundation. While many in the program think of their Higher Power as God this is not a requirement. Many others view their Higher Power as a Universal Spirit, a higher level of consciousness or whatever else they choose to define. Even among those who call their Higher Power God, many define that God in ways that may be radically different than how the religion of their youth defined God.
In the 12 Step Tradition we follow, it’s important for recovery to accept the idea of a Higher Power but how you define it is entirely up to you. Over the years there have been many atheists and agnostics as well as people of all faiths who have found serenity and recovery through the 12 Steps.
If you think this might work for you we invite you to join us on Saturday mornings or Thursday evenings (see miseryaddicts.org/ssa-meetings). We recommend you attend several meetings before you make a final decision.
Regardless we wish you every success in your struggle with misery addiction.
